John Hawks has an interesting report on his blog about the Denisovans. New genetic testing shows that they are more mixed up than what we thought they were. It seems that they had a large proportion of Neanderthal genes in their genome. But they also included genes from an undetermined ancient Homo. It seems that they might have interbred with or been descended from somebody else, and we don't know who. Possibly another out of Africa group that we
aren't currently aware of. So it appears that various human groups were running around intermingling for quite a while.

Rebecca Wragg Sykes also has a write-up on it, with a link to John Hawks' report. Her report takes a slightly different view, but is complementary to John's. Both are interesting.
