Scientists Photograph Giant Squid in Wild

September 28, 2005

TOKYO -- The giant squid can be found in books and in myths, but for the first time, a team of Japanese scientists has captured on film one of the most mysterious creatures of the deep-sea in its natural habitat.

The team led by Tsunemi Kubodera, from the National Science Museum in Tokyo, tracked the 26-foot long Architeuthis as it attacked prey nearly 3,000 feet deep off the coast of Japan's Bonin islands.

Jewel of a find Garry, I have always been intrigued by the giant squid. One in captivity would be a stellar undertaking.
Sincerely,

Nice picture, Rusty. I'd hate to meet that critter in a dark alley. Or in the ocean. It looks as if it could sink a small boat.

Well I personally been involved in a boat sinking caused by a seal ... so I can affirm, from experience ... it doesn't take a lot of effort when that effort is applied by someone looking for a free lunch.

1 rowboat + 1 rower + 1 seal = a lot of water.

TANSTAAFL! I'll bet it wasn't very funny at the time. Did you manage to save the boat?

It is hard to sink a wooden skiff. Swamping them and rolling them, on the other hand, remarkably easy.
Just at 300+ pounds that just wants your lunch.

I don't suppose smacking it with an oar would make
it go away, either. How did you finally get rid of
it? Did you lose your lunch?
