Hi there,

I have a question I would like yer views on:

If I have an n*m matrix X made up of n measurements of m variables (assuming all the variables measure temperature and so the units are Kelvin (K)). Does this imply that the covariance of X has units K^2?

Also, if S = covariance(X) and S = ULU' (as in singular value decomposition), what are the units of U, L and U'??

Thanks for your help,
Confused Student

Wouldn't have a clue about matrices but here's another one : <n/0=n and nx0=n> OR <n/0=infinity and nx0=0> which couplet is true and which is false? And here's another one : where did the earth's oceans come from? timer

I've not even understood what's the subject of your first clue but concerning your last one, you'll have the leisure to observe some freesh water coming on Earth directelly from the Kuiper belt. Global sea level will increase because of this extraterrestrial delivery. As you seem to be clever in Maths. About how much Angstr?m should be this rise and how much time should it be observable after the comet (Machholz) crossing ?

Hi kit kat; First, an angstrom is 1 ten millionth of a meter. The Bohr Radius, the distance from the electron to the proton in the hydrogen atom, is about 1/2 angstrom. The comet Machholz would have to directly HIT the earth to deliver extra water to our oceans but at 7 miles/second terminal velocity the water-rich comet would instantly turn into PLASMA<gamma ray burster>..and no WATER would result from such a "tunguska" collision. If the sea level rises it will be from global warming, primarily breaking significant chunks of ice<as big as US states> free from the antarctic margins. No, our oceans came from an original terran RING SYSTEM that had lots of hydrates<elements with attached H2O molecules>in the planetisimals in this early saturn type ring system. The incoming mars-sized body was captured when it hit the Roche Lobe. It looked like a comma<fat head/long tail>because it was spinning very fast at perigee<closest approach>. The tail of mini-moons shot out of the earth's gravity well at high velocity but the head had less mass and greater c.g. to c.g. radial distance, both effects combined to SLOW IT DOWN and thus go into a highly elliptical but CAPTURED orbit around the earth. It then perturbed <romped and STOMPED> the ring system out of orbit and onto the earth : the origins of our continents and oceans. You can do a simple experiment to test this comma/head/tail shape : drop a spinning black oil droplet into the eddy of a draining bathtub. For a brief instant you'll see the comma shape<instead of just a long tail>. As to n/0=n rather than infinity, I'll do that in the next post. W=P

Thank you. Seems complicate anyways.

Yes sure, post more additions. I have all my time to understand them.

Science FACT or FICTION is always determined by experiment. The next time a math-person talks about infinity, give them a radish and knife, and ask if they can DEMONSTRATE infinity by cutting zero pieces off the radish<dividing by zero, or n/0=infinity>. Like wave-particle in physics there is quantity-quality in mathematics : there are TWO laws of multiplication and TWO laws of division. 1:Mult is repetitive addition<Quantity>. 2:Mult is vector comparison<Quality>. 3:Division is repetitive subtraction<Quantity>. 4:Division is vector partition<Quality>. Thus n/0, by law 3, is n-0-0-0.....-0-0-0...until hell glaciates and the world wears flat...-0-0-0... get the point? Dividing by zero is nothing more than n-o=n, you don't get infinity, zero, or anything else, just n, the finite thing<like a radish>you started with in the first place. So, rotate symbol 45 degrees n/0=n-0=n. The next TIME a know-it-all teacher uses the word "infinity", try this radish experiment on him.. What do you get with 2x3x0 when you want to find out AREAS? 6 unit areas or 0 unit volumes? Thus nx0=n=n+0 OR 0<Law 1 or 2>depending on what you were looking for in the first place. So, when you see a zero pop into an equation, ask your self : is this a VALID VECTOR element, or just a spurious zero? As innocent as this looks, it's the mathematical basis for UFOs to travel at c^2 thruout the universe<DeBroglie's equation:U=c^2/v and E=mc^2=hw>. At c^2, for fermions only, you go 1 light year in 105 seconds; is that fast enough for you?
