An amazing British war Destroyer-Type 25-was launched yesterday. The first one of 6 planned.

I understand on good authority, even though details have not been released yet, that its
new Super Radar is able lock onto at least 25 incoming planes, simultaneously, track them and blow them away with the new PAAM missiles. It is also able to lock on to and dispose of inbound cruise type missiles coming in at Mach3.

It seems to have just one four inch gun in the prow (ridiculous by modern standards) So I would guess it holds missiles all the way around its tall Pyramid type structure (see small picture)
The Destroyer is also deep enough to hold 2 inter-continental balistic missiles, (maybe more). It also has anti submarine capability.

It puts a capital P back into pride, for me anyhow.

Minister for Defence Procurement Lord Bach said: "The Type 45 represents a 21st century response to the most sophisticated threats that might face UK or allied ships in the years to come."

It may not be the sophisticated threats that they have to worry about.

Except scuds...

Or was that down to the operators?

Hehe....for firing warning shots Daniel, huh Now why didnt I think of that?
Except that single gun (its 4.5 inches) can fire a shell 20 miles.
Some distance when you think we had two very heavy 18" guns at Dover, in WWII, called "Winnie" an "Pooh" that lobbed a 2 ton shell just 20 miles. Shells were so heavy they took 10 minutes to load.

Re- those Scuds, Rusty.
You're right, notoriously innacurate old Russian technology. One missed Israel completely, coming down in a Kuwait car park.
Even Cruise missiles, have/or had a problem, they cannot fly far over flat desert, since they need a terrain to lock onto and follow.

I have just read that the British Type 45 Cruiser uses Electric propulsion, published speed quoted, is 30 knots. Ill bet its true speed will be faster, since Navys never quote real speed. Same for nuclear subs. No one knows their true real speed. However when the British nuclear submarine was ordered to go to the Falklands to attack the Battleship 'Belgrano' It covered the 7500 miles from the North Atlantic in 3 days, underwater.

Mike ... you are correct that a 5" gun is, from one perspective overkill, but if you think about its use you will see that it is the most appropriate weapon.

1. The primary reason for firing a warning shot is to make sure that the other guy sees it and realizes you are serious. What you want is something reasonable sized, rather loud, capable of careful aim across the bow, and able to make one heck of a big splash.

Rusty ... Scuds may miss ... but aiming one off the bow might just be the best way to blow someone out of the water.

The other critical thing about those situations in which a warning shot is called for is that often the next response is to hit the engine room ... not to sink the vessel. A destroyer's gun with an armor piercing shell can do this with ease. Missles tend to be very blunt objects.

Hope this helps.
