This Feb: 15th an asteroid about half the size of a football field will fly past Earth only 17,200 miles
above our planet's surface.
"This is a record-setting close approach," says Don Yeomans of NASA's Near Earth Object Program at JPL.
"Since regular sky surveys began in the 1990s, we've never seen an object this big get so close to Earth."
Half the size of a football field, and (during Chinese New Year Celebrations) But "2012 DA14 will definitely not hit Earth," emphasizes Yeomans. "The orbit of the asteroid is known well enough to rule out an impact."

***Thoughts
Flying by at 17.2K miles is INSIDE some of our Earth satellites
Lets hope it does'nt hit one of those!

Certainly the closest for anything of this size, but the 1972 Earth grazer was quite spectacular.

I wonder to what extent 2012 DA14 will be deflected by Earth's gravity.

Now NASA echo's my thoughts!
It seems there is a dangerous possibility that this football field size Satellite could hit an Earth satellite TOMORROW' the 15th Feb:2013.!
So NASA is going to film, and broadcast this possibility LIVE.

DO NOT MISS. You could witness a once in a lifetime event.

17,200 miles

earths diameter is apx 7800 miles

14,400 miles is well within where the outer ring of objects are
that orbit the earth.

there will be some interaction , and there will be some
projectiles due to the interaction.

could get messy up there and we might get some of our
junk back.

could be quite a show!

just think we might end up with a satellite that becomes
attached to the asteroid that transmits its data / position to us.

NASA also mentioned that since DA14 is flying by inside our Communication Satellites, the gravitational forces set up may well cause some Satellite Quakes to occur.

I think the odds that Asteroid DA14 will hit a countrys Spy Satellites are greatest

Here is one of the live Satellite feeds from Australia

Enjoy

I watched part of the NASA program. It was interesting, but what really grabbed my attention was their demonstration of Eyes on the Solar System. That is an interactive simulation of the solar system showing the movements of objects of interest. There is a lot of interaction available so that you can see all kinds of views.

I just tried it and it works pretty good. The biggest problem I had was that to run it you have to enable JAVA. There is quite a bit of data that has to be downloaded to run it, so it takes a minute or so to get set up.

“Well as we all know now.....2012 DA14 did not hit Earth.
The orbit of the Asteroid was known well enough to rule out any Earth impact.
If the asteroid, which weighs approximately 143,000 tons, did enter the Earth's atmosphere and explode, the force would be enough to destroy an area the size of Greater London.
NASA states-"That these kinds of Ateroids hit the Earth about once every 1200 years. Although the chance of it hitting Earth is just 0.031 per cent, they can't rule out the possibility that it might hit on its next fly-pass in 2020"
