This is amazing. The Sailrocket 2 set a world record sailing speed of over 50 knots, which has been the looked for break point for sailing, sort of like the speed of sound for airplanes. Now does that look like a sail boat to you? The spar sticking out on this side is the equivalent of the keel, and the wing on the far side is the sail. There was a huge amount of R&D involved in this one. It just shows sometimes if you back off and make a complete break with existing designs you can completely change how things work. Bill Gill

That is one hot sailboat! Look, a bird, a plane, no, it's supersailor! Faster than the speeding wind! Able to crest small waves with a single bound! Made of the latest technology and engineering bests.
I can see it now.
Thanks for sharing, Bill G.

Wow...That is one fabulous super Sailboat! The most amazing thing is that it speeds across the sea 2 1/2 (2.5)times FASTER than the wind that pushes it!!
Must have cost a lot of money re:- the anti-cavitation hydro-foil, the high strength Titanium and carbon fibre Honeycomb constuction, special Sail and years of research.
Faster than the wind! Wow again. But I expect the Sea has to remain pretty calm? Many thanks for the URL, Bill and Amaranth

I expect it did cost a lot, but then there are a lot of people that spend millions on racing boats, so there will be a market for them. And of course this is just the first one. Now that it has been done there will be more people building them, and they will probably be adapted for general use. Not telling what will be coming up for high speed sailing in the future now that the barrier has been broken.

sailboats go faster than the wind all the time these days.
its just a matter of force ( wind angle and wind speed ), ship mass , resistance , and momentum.
a lighter one would have moved faster.
this is all due to QM as predicted however.

Paul, this magnificent water speed achievement is not something you should dismiss so lightly. When you say:- "its just a matter of force ( wind angle and wind speed ), ship mass, resistance , and momentum."
You have written an almost dismissive and simplistic explanation. You can be sure that:- The structural engineering required on both sail, boat, and hydro-foils...took years of maths, planning, and manufacturing and testing of new and unique composite materials.
also what exactly do you mean when you say:- "this is all due to QM as predicted however"....?

That is just some more trolling. He is trying to get somebody to flame him about his attitude. Ignore it, that's what I am trying to do. It isn't easy. As far as the work on the boat is concerned you are right. There is a more extensive write up about it in the Feb. 2103 issue of Wired magazine. Paul Larsen who created it, with a lot of help from others, has been a sailing freak ever since he was a child. He started out by completely re-imagining the dynamics of sail boats, then got a lot of help on the design. It was not just something dreamed up and thrown together overnight. This was significant effort on his part and on the part of his team. Bill Gill

I'm not sure why you became upset about what I wrote , Mike. everything I said about the boat was true. I was commenting on the boat traveling faster than the wind and that's all of the meaning that my post contained. because you guys seemed to think that traveling faster than the wind was something new. I did not post anything negative as far as I can tell. I did however state that it will go faster if they can make it lighter , which is a fact of science. you'll have to ask orac about how QM predicted it after QM uses the results and then predict's the results.
