Was that a baton, or a Mars bar?

My wife says the Mars pics were all taken in the gibber desert. If they are Mars, where are all the little green men; the ones who taught the bop to Billy Lee Riley back in the ‘50s (cf. Flying Saucer Rock n Roll).

BTW: is the G in gibber hard or soft?

a beautiful picture.
with loads of interesting shapes and geological features.
makes me want a mars rover myself.

I must take this photo to my big screen for a better view.
I sure wish we could look at the same resolution they look at.
anyone see the pyramids yet?

I cant wait to get the 3D fly through of this area.
someone will layer this image into google earths mars and
we can fly through it.
and walk around in it.

The "g" in "gibber" is hard- as in "gate". "Gibber" with a soft "g" would be something entirely different--- on the other hand it may possibly be appropriate for certain contributions on NQS.

From the perspective of an English person or an Australian there are a lot of words the Americans misspell, like honour, valour, colour, etc. Don't go making people wrong when you are equally at fault.

In order to further muddy the waters about this, the spelling of 'gibber' is the one most usually used, but I have seen 'gibba' and 'gibbar'. It is an aboriginal word and as they had no written language we shall just have to muddle along with the English version, and I suppose 'gibber' is the spelling we are most used to as English speakers. Maybe, who knows, certainly not me, there may be a French or German language variation, or American (with a retroflex 'R'). Or Finnish with 2 ' i's and 3 'b's. Who knows? But there are plenty of words in English that have the same spelling/pronunciation, but different meaning, 'but' is one of them!

I thought 'jibber' as in 'jibber jabber' was spelled with a 'j' not a 'g' as suggested in the pronunciation guide. After all we none of us would know what a Gabbawock was would we!

I was right about the Gibber-ish though!

OK V F M N X!

It's only language, after all, and I suppose it's all on topic if we are talking about curiosity.

As in--
F U N E X?
I F M Etc,,,

Paul- I think you have admirably illustrated the folly of expecting the English language to follow logical spelling and/or pronunciation rules. Although roughly 80% of English does follow such rules it is the exceptions that cause the problems. We, who grow up with it, accept the irregularities mostly without problem, but, as anyone who has attempted to learn a foreign language can show, it's really difficult to do, even with a phonetic language. My own problem with learning French was the concept of gender in language-- so at least there's an example where English is easier to learn.

And the word that we are discussing is an aboriginal one. They pronounce it as 'Gibber' with a hard 'G', and we spell it the way we do. 'Gibba' would be more appropriate I think (but the spell-check hates it!).

I wasnt expecting anything , I was just pointing at some of the differences.

also , I think your the one who broke out the pronunciation in the thread.

and I believe Bill.s broke the fun with the language bit.

thus the barn , painted red.

and would you mind clicking the reply button to the post you will be replying to.

I've noticed that almost all of the replies are to bill , that makes it hard to figure out who your replying to.

its not just you however , just look through the thread and you'll see.

I've replied to bill s to use as an example.

but my reply is to you , Ellis

myself , Bill and R2 are the only ones who press the reply button on the post that they are replying to.

its only the people from the UK and OZ that do not.
