I put up a thread about ways of generating electricity about a year ago. Someone suggested geobacter and I tried it with limited success.

I'm thinking of trying to build a steam powered one now, any suggestions, am I gonna blow myself up an end up with 90% 3rd egree burns?

Sounds like you want something quiet. I have a feeling that quiet=inefficient, like a steam engine.

Here's an unusual generator that's pretty quiet, but it's also pretty inefficient. Its primary purpose is to generate heat and the electricity is a byproduct. Maybe you also burn fuel for heating and could do something like this?
