now i've been researching inviibility materials (as i love the idea) and just a moment ago i was messing with my fiber optic toy my sister has. i realized that light bends with it so i looked into it. and i was thinking, if you could make some kind of cylinder of tightly wound fiber optic cables, couldn't that theoretically bend light around you and into the space behind you enough to create active camouflage? (or optical camouflage) i would like some people to tell me (if so) why i'm wrng so i don't get too excited about it or if people want to support me that would be great too.

If you could place enough light conductors on your body to bend all incoming light around you into the background, it wouldn't camo you. Unless you could transmit light reflected from your background back to the viewer, you would show up as a hole in the scenery. A black spot.

There are experiments going on in the Army and elswhere using tiny cameras and LEDs to project what is behind you from your front side. The cameras & LEDs would be imbedded in the fabric of your clothes.

Would the 'black spot' be picked up by the eyes, or would it be blurred, kind of a peripheral image? (ok, I know I dont know, I know you probably dont know for sure, but I know someone knows more than me.)


I'd bat for Religion if only the little tykes could form an 'Allstar' team.

Not sure what you mean by "picked up by the eyes". Your brain-image would be formed both by what the eyes "picked up" and by what they did not pick up. but the sharpness of the outline of the hole is an interesting question. We're way into the hypothetical here and I suppose it would depend on the coverage of the light pipes. If the coverage were perfect (hypothetically) then the outline would be sharp

Black holes would be a different story as space is curved around them relative to their mass. As in the famous Einstein proof, objects directly behind them would appear in front or at least peripherally which might "blur" the edges of the image. We need a Hawking here.

Dunno, just some thoughts.

the black spot would be totally black. not blurred at all. even if it were a black spot it would look pretty cool. at the least u could be invisible in the dark areas. if u wanted full invisibility u would need lots of tiny glass fibers. the fibers cant be extending from one intersection in the center. there would have to be millions of parallel fibers at every angle. the problem with that would be how u could use the invisibility. if u want a human to be invisible then u would need to poke him full of holes in order to have the glass fibers go through him. a simpler way would be to have fibers extending only at one angle. if u look only from that angle it will look invisible. if u look at any other angle it will look like a display screen.

tiny LEDS could cause the fiber wires to appear more transpearent but only if the correct colors are chosen But it would allow the changing of your camoflauge "on the go" which would allow room for versatility. although you would need a solar panel on your head if you want to carry all those lights. just a thought.
