Although this item happened two years ago,I thought it interesting enough to include in Scienceagogo's pages.

In August 2006 the crew of the Yacht "Maiken" came across miles of 'Sand floating in the Sea'. Upon sailing closer and actually
through the sand, they realised it was fine pumice stone.
Which eventually blocked their Diesel engine cooling water.
After clearing their intake pipe, they were able to sail away, in time to witness the birth of a new volcanic Pacific Island.
