"David Goldston, the former staff director for Congress' House Committee on Science, focused on the challenges of communicating scientific information to lawmakers. His message was that, contrary to popular opinion, most members of Congress like science and want to be informed. Scientists, however, have a lot to learn about reaching them on their terms."

This is completely beside the issue. People "liking science" and "wanting to be informed" is irrelevant. There's not a couch potato in the world who wouldn't like a billion dollars - if it just dropped in his lap. That's what people want from science - they want it to be easy. They want it predigested. And they want it to agree with their preconceptions.

I just caught this on CSPAN. He speaks directly to this problem, as well as the public perception of science and scientists.

Good reference. Just got back from vacation. I liked the thread on amazon, too. Good stuff. That's pretty much the exact point I was making.
