You may need to register (harmless) to get into this Washington Post article. But the summary is that the radio telescope has been "left behind" in a reordering of astronomy budget priorities, and is in danger of having to close due to lack of funding. This despite the telescope performing several crucial and irreplacable missions, including an educational one I didn't know about.

Normally a local representative or senator would help out, but Puerto Rico has no voting representatives in Congress to do that. Ironically, this is where an earmark would be helpful and even righteous to do.
