There's a lot to discuss in this article (on both sides!).

My main concern with deforestation is the impact on rainfall and other land-use considerations. Forests are relatively neutral for CO2 (overall), but have big impacts on climate in other ways. It also depends on what kind of forest and at what latitide.

Back in the 18th century, Noah Webster agreed with the prevailing wisdom of the day (deforestation was causing the Little Ice Age), and coined the phrase, "Frost follows the Plow."

I think it was more like desertification that they were observing.
